I was going to start a new thread but will post mine on here. Finding it really difficult to back one for win so taking a couple at big prices that will hopefully run well. I know Qabala was really impressive last time but she has only had a couple of runs and I can’t back her at a short price now, but I will say that if she wins then she is a very special filly. I thought betting on two Roger Varian horses last time was interesting, Qabala was backed from 7/1 in morning to 10/3, Mot Juste drifted from 7/2 to 7/1, so it’s clear to see where the confidence was. And historically, the horses that were beaten in the Nell Gwyn have had a better record in this than the winners, even if you forget last years 66/1 winner, before that out of the 26 horses that were unplaced in the trial, 6 went on to place in this at big prices. So I do like LOOK AROUND in this, who was only 4th (beaten 4 lengths) behind Qabala but she was staying on really well and the three in front may have been more ready than her. I am not saying she can win as she has a lot to do on the ratings but at 40/1 I have backed her each way (4 places) and also at 18/1 e/w (8 places). Her sire Kingman was narrowly beaten in 2000 Guineas and dam Magic America was placed in Group 1 in France though was a bit disappointing on her only visit here when only 6th in the Cheveley Park. Also had a saver on ICONIC CHOICE (25/1, 4 places), she has a lot of stamina in her pedigree and she only narrowly failed against Dandhu at Newbury. Trends probably against her though as no horse to have run in Fred Darling has won this since Lahan in 2000.

    Bets - Look Around e/w @ 40/1 (4 places) & 18/1 (8 places), saver e/w on Iconic Choice @ 25/1 (4 places)

    Good luck.

I was thinking exactly the same thing about Lady Kaya, she would surely be a shorter price if she was from one of the bigger stables. One doubt I have is because it was different ground conditions (though she also has good form on good going, having won by 10 lengths on her 2nd start) for the Leopardstown trial and she was very well backed that day. Definitely with a chance.
  • Mark Johnston
Nice priced winner, hope you did singles too.
  • my round Robin
Brilliant tipping, Stevie. So unlucky with the treble, but a great double at very nice prices, very well done.

Only 5th. I should have simply followed the draw, almost all the runners (with exception of runners from stalls 6 & 10 switching places) finished in exact stall order, always thought draw bias at Pontefract was underestimated.

You are right, Dodd, he did stay on, but still a bit disappointing that he has been beaten favourite last 3 times now.

    5:50 Pontefract

Shortlist - Zapper Cass, Rickyroadboy, Deeds Not Words

Selection - Deeds Not Words (E/W)

Another tricky race, of the 3 that interested me Zapper Cass finished 3rd (of 7) from 6 lbs lower in this race last year, on other two visits here he has been unplaced too, all 3 times he had a poor draw but that is again the case today. He seems to have improved during the past year and Mick Appleby does very well in these apprentice races, including here at Ponte. Draw is the problem with him, and he is a huge drifter. Rickyroadboy is the only runner to never have won over the minimum trip, he has one way of running, all 3 of his wins have come when he has been able to lead, today it isn’t certain as there are other prominent racers too but they are drawn wide so he may get a chance from stall 2, and as it happens last 3 winners of this race all led from the start. Jockey is in form too with 2 winners and a 2nd from last 3 rides, trainer is 0 from 36 (12 placed) in apprentice races though and to me DEEDS NOT WORDS’ recent form looks stronger. Selection has not won over the minimum trip since his 2yo days but is having only 5th run since joining Tracey Waggot, and he has outrun his big odds last twice, finishing 3rd of 5 (28/1) in a stronger race at Newcastle and then 3rd of 9 (25/1) over this c&d last time, finishing ahead of Foxtrot Knight despite the latter having a better draw. Foxtrot Knight is 2nd favourite today, and he is respected because he won this race last year but on two recent runs he looks held by not only Deeds Not Words but also Zapper Cass (on Wolverhampton Run). Tricky race, but I think a similar performance to last time could see selection place at least as he is 1 lbs lower and also has slightly better draw than last time.

Deeds Not Words, 0.5 pt each way @ 10/1

    Good luck.

7th not 6th, but if Farhh Away hadn’t come in 2nd to spoil it (I really couldn’t have fancied it), I would have picked up a nice tricast.
